The RV Maintenance Checklist Every Owner Should Have

Owning an RV allows you to explore multiple destinations and have unique experiences with your family, partner, or friends. As an RV owner, you want to keep your RV in top condition so you can enjoy it whenever you want. However, basic maintenance like washing it every weekend is not enough. If your RV is not getting proper maintenance, systems may fail and lead to bigger issues.

If you’re a proud RV owner and want to keep your RV running for as long as possible, this checklist is for you.

RV Maintenance Checklist

  1. Inspect Your Roof

Many RVs have rubber roofs, which should be inspected regularly to make sure they are in good condition and free of cracks and leaks. To inspect your RV roof, you’ll need a ladder at least 3 feet long so you can reach the RV’s roofline.  Climb up and visually inspect your RV roof for any problems.  If there is visible damage and leakage has occurred, clean off any RV roof sealant residue and then patch with RV rooftop coating (which also provides protection against UV rays).

If necessary, call your local RV company or dealer to see what they recommend.  Get their opinion on whether you can fix it yourself or if the RV needs service. They may be able to provide maintenance for your RV.

  1. Secure Loose Items And Furniture

When you are RVing, keep all loose items and furniture stowed, as they could fly around and hit someone or break if you make any sudden turns or break quickly.

  1. Check And Clean All Exterior Parts

Make sure that all exterior parts are clean and that wax has been applied. You can also ask your RV storage facility or the RV dealership where you store your RV if they provide exterior RV cleaning services. It would also be wise to check for any loose parts.

  1. Inspect RV Interior Furnishings And Accessories

Look for any loose RV cabinet knobs and RV furniture screws.  Check the lining of any RV curtains to make sure there are no holes or rips in them, especially if your RV is stored outside where weather conditions can damage it.

  1. Inspect RV Flooring

If the RV’s flooring has linoleum or carpet, check for any torn or frayed RV flooring.  Also, inspect the RV floor mats to make sure they are secure.  Take note of any stains on the carpet and clean them if possible. Again, your RV company or dealer may also offer maintenance services that you can take advantage of.

  1. Inspect RV Window And Door Seals

Leaky windows and doors or loose door latches can put your RV at risk of water damage.  Visually inspect them for any problems. If they are not working properly, tighten up the door seals with door seal lubricant, and check the latch mechanism on your RV’s windows and door lock mechanism.

If you need window or door repair, contact your RV dealer or RV manufacturer for professional RV window or door repair/replacement.

  1. Clean Your Water System

You should regularly flush out any water system—including your freshwater tank, faucets, water air chamber, water pump, and water filter.

  1. Inspect Your Battery And RV Electrical System

Visually inspect your RV battery for any bulging, leakage, or loose connections.  If the RV has two batteries, check the voltage on each one with a voltmeter and then closely inspect them side by side to see if one has less voltage than the other.  If this is the case, you’ll need RV battery replacement.
